Adding a new user to your Joomla! website using Community Builder.

Out of the box, users are managed via Joomla!'s user management system.

Access to Joomla!'s user system

This is screen accessible via: Select Users → Manage from the drop-down menus.

However, in this instance we won't be using Joomla!'s solution.  Instead working with a component called Community Builder.

Why Community Builder?

Community Builder adds more versatility to your Joomla! website than the out of the box user management solution provided by Joomla!  Enabling website administrators to begin users charging paid subscriptions to access your website content.  Supports duration based subscriptions, merchandise sales and user donations.  Very powerful and flexible solution that supports sales tax, powerful coupon discounting, automated reminder emailing and many more built-in integrations.

Access to Community

This is screen accessible via: Select Components → Community Builder → User Management from the drop-down menus.

Adding a new user

From the User Management screen, click on + New.  Some of the fields these fields don't appear on all sites.  The site this demonstration is working from is for a Golf Club.  Then enter the following details:

  • First name;
  • Last name;
  • Username;
  • Email;
  • Password;
  • Golflink number if known;
  • Address details - note these details are only required if necessary.  Personally with hacking and privacy if there is no purpose to holding this information, then don't.  Additionally, if you are going to store this information, then as a minimum secure the website with SSL.  Also in your governance documentation explain for future committee members the reason to hold personal details.
    • Street address;
    • Suburb;
    • State;
    • Postcode;
  • Phone number;
  • Home club;
  • Email for web

Once the data has been entered, cross check the details again looking for missing fields or transcription errors.

Happy with the data entered, click Save or Save & Close

Remembering save will store the new details.  Whereas, save and close will also store the new member's details, but also return the administrator to the user list screen.
